Koreans put a lot of weight on one's age.This is based on the age hierachy in Confucian culture. We have our own system when it comes to calculating our age. We consider the time spent in a mother's womb to be a year. A newborn would already be considered a one-year old. That's why Koreans consider thmselves a year older than they would be according to the Western age system. We also say we got a year older as soon as a new year starts, even if our birthdays have yet to come. We often ask someone's year of birth to avoid confusion. People's birthdays on the solar calendar can also change every year if they go by the lunar calendar.

 

한국 사람들은 나이를 매우 중요하게 생각합니다. 이러한 생각은 유교 문화의 나이에 따른 위계질서에 기반을 두고 있습니다. 한국에서 나이를 계산하는 법은 서양의 나이 계산 법과 약간 다릅니다. 한국에서는 태아가 엄마 뱃속에 있는 시간을 1년으로 계산하기 때문에, 아이는 태어나자마자 한 살이 됩니다. 그러므로 서양식 계산법에 따르면, 한국 사람들은 실제 나이보다 한 살 더 많은 셈이 됩니다. 뿐만 아니라 아직 생일이 지나지 않았어도 해가 바뀌면 한 살을 더 먹었다고 얘기합니다. 그래서 혼선을 방지하기 위해서 (나이를 물을 때) 상대방의 출생 연도를 물어보기도 합니다. 음력 생을 따르는 사람들의 경우에는 생일 날짜가 양력상 매해 바뀌게 됩니다.
