In Korea, parents play a fairly big role in a marriage. When two people want to get married, they need to get the blessing from their parents. Parents look at family backgrounds, academics, health and even age. If the parents do not approve of the marriage, it's extremely hard for the couple to get married. That's why many couples break up because of their parents. Because of this culture, arranged marriages still exist in Korea. Parents arrange formal dates for their children. This is known as "seon" and the sole aim is to find a future spouse. There are also many professional matchmaking agencies that are in business. Many people find their spouses through these services.

 

한국에서는 결혼에 있어 부모의 역할이 상당히 중요합니다. 두 사람이 결혼을 하고 싶다면, 양가 부모로부터 허락을 받아야 합니다. 이때 보통 부모들은 상대방 집안 배경, 학력, 건강, 그리고 심지어 나이까지도 꼼꼼하게 따집니다. 부모님이 결혼을 허락하지 않는 경우, 남녀가 결혼을 하기가 매우 어려워집니다. 부모님 때문에 헤어지는 남녀가 상당히 많은 것도 사실입니다. 이러한 문화로 인해, 한국에는 여전히 중매결혼이 존재합니다. 부모들은 자녀들에게 공식적인 만남의 자리를 주선하기도 합니다. 이를 ‘선’이라고 하며, 선의 유일한 목적은 미래의 배우자를 찾는 것입니다. 또한 많은 전문 결혼 정보 업체들도 영업 중입니다. 이러한 업체들을 통해 배우자를 만나게 되는 사람들도 많습니다.
