Relations between Korea and Japan are not good currently. Japan is making groundless claims that it owns the Dokdo islets. It has even changed its history textbooks to support that claim. Japan also wants to call the ocean between the two nations the Sea of Japan. Korea insists that it should be called the East Sea. Japan forcibly occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945. It committed horrific wartime atrocities. Japan is currently denying its wrongdoings during the occupation. It is refusing to compensate for the victims. The current Japanese government is also moving to revise the pacifist constitution. Japanese political leaders also visit the Yasukuni Shrine, which pays tribute to war criminals. These moves are straining relations with Korea and other neighboring countries.

 

최근 한일 관계는 그다지 좋은 편이 아닙니다. 우선 일본은 독도가 자신들의 영토라는 터무니 없는 주장을 펼치고 있습니다. 그러한 주장을 뒷받침하기 위해 자국의 역사 교과서들을 수정하기도 했습니다. 뿐만 아니라 일본은 두 나라 사이에 위치한 바다를 일본해라고 명명하기를 원합니다. 한국은 이를 동해라고 불러야 한다고 주장하고 있습니다. 일본은 1910년부터 1945년까지 한국을 강제 점거했고, 끔찍한 전쟁 만행을 저질렀습니다. 일본은 현재 일제 강점기의 과오들을 부정하고 있는 상황입니다. 더불어 희생자들에 대한 보상도 거부하고 있습니다. 현재 일본 정부는 평화 헌법을 수정하려는 움직임마저 보이고 있습니다. 일본의 정치 지도자들은 또한 전범들의 위패가 있는 야스쿠니 신사에 참배를 합니다. 일본의 이러한 행보는 한국 및 다른 주변국과의 관계를 경색시키고 있습니다.

B : It needs to be more responsible for its actions in history.

 

A : 일본은 2차 대전 때 자신들이 저지른 과오데 대해 부정하고 있어.

B : 알아. 도무지 이해가 안 가.

A : 나도 마찬가지야.

B : 일본은 과거사에 대해 보다 책임감 있는 태도를 보여야 해.
