June the 6th is Memorial Day in Korea. It's called hyeon-chung-il and it's a national holiday. It is a day to honor those who sacrificed their lives while serving the country. Military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty are remembered on this day. We also pay tribute to those who fought for Korea's independence during Japan's occupation. We also remember those who fought in the Korean War. An official ceremony takes place at National Cemetery in Seoul. People pray and lay flowers at the graves of those being remembered. People hang the Korean flag at half-staff as a sign of respect and mourning.

 

6월 6일을 현충일로 한국의 국경일 중 하나입니다. 현충이릉 나라를 위해 용감하게 목숨을 바친 순국 선열을 기리는 날입니다. 이날 한국 국민들은 임무 중에 순직한 군인들을 추모합니다. 뿐만 아니라 일제 강점기 당시 독립운동가들과 한국 전쟁 참전 용사들도 추모합니다. 현충일에는 국립서울현충원에서 공식 추모 행사가 열립니다. 사람들은 순국선열을 위해 묵념하고 그들의 묘에 헌화를 하기도 합니다. 그리고 경의와 애도를 표하기 위해 태극기를 조기로 게양합니다.
