Korea's state religion used to be Buddhism a long time ago. Today, many Koreans still identy themselves as Buddhists. The biggest  celebration in Buddhism is Buddha's Birthday. It is the equivalent to  Chistmas for Christians. Buddha's Birthday is April 8th on the lunar calendar, so the date changes on the Western calendar every year. This year, it falls on May 6th. Main streets are decorated with colorful lotus lanterns weeks prior to this day. There are large street parades that take place as well. It's a very amusing sight for tourists. Buddhist temples offer special services and provide meals to visitors on this day.

 

아주 옛날 대한민국의 국교는 불교였습니다. 아직도 한국인 중에는 불교 신자가 많습니다. 불교에서 가장 큰 기념일은 석가탄신일입니다. 석가탄신일은 기독교인들의 크리스마스에 해당하는 날입니다. 석가탄신일은 음력으로 4월 8일이기 대문에 양력으로는 날짜가 매해 달라집니다. 올해 석가탄신일은 5월 6일입니다. 석가탄신일이 되기 몇 주 전부터 거리에는 형형색색의 연등이 달립니다. 뿐만 아니라 대규모의 길거리 행렬도 펼쳐집니다. 이는 관광객들에겐 놓치기 아까운 풍경입니다. 절에서는 석가탄신일에 특별 법회가 열리고 방문객들에게 음식을 제공합니다.
