Korea is one of the most rapidly aging countries in the world. It was officially labeled and "aging society" back in 2000. That's when the elderly started to take up more than 7% of the country's population. Korea is now approaching the next level-an "aged society." That's when the elderly account for more than 14% of the total population. It is expected to hit that mark within the next decade. The main factors behind this trend are the country's low birthrate and longer life expectancy. If the current trend holds, Korea will face lower economic productivity in the future. Plus, the burden of the working population to support the elderly will increase greatly. 

 

한국은 전 세계에서 고령화가 가장 빠른 속도로 일어나고 있는 나라 중 하나입니다. 지난 2000년 한국은 전체 인구 중 고령층이 7퍼센트 이상을 차지하는 '고령화 사회'에 공식 돌입하였습니다. 그리고 이제는 고령층이 전체 인구의 14퍼센트를 차지하는 다음 단계인 '고령 사회'로 진입하고 있습니다. 향후 10년 안에 이 단계에 도달할 것으로 예상됩니다. 이러한 현상의 주요 원인으로는 저출산율과 평균 수명 연장을 꼽을 수 있습니다. 이러한 추세가 계속된다면 한국은 향후 경제 생산성 하락에 직면하게 되고, 고령층을 부양해야 하는 노동 인구의 부담이 더욱 커질 것입니다.
