Homeless animals

Raising pets can cost quite a lot of money. Therefore, when the economy goes bad. some pet owners cannot afford to keep their pets anymore. It was estimated that there were more than 25,000 homeless pets in Korea as of 2013. Most local districts run animal shelters. But they do not have enough room or funds to take care of all the homeless animals. Many places have no choice but to put them to sleep. More recently, the public has become more aware of these animals thanks to campaigns held by animal shelters. Pet owners have also been urged to become more responsible with their pets.

 

애완동물을 키우는 데는 돈이 많이 들어갈 수 있습니다. 그래서인지 경기가 나빠지면 애완동물을 버리는 사람들이 생겨납니다. 2013년 기준으로 한국에 버려진 애완동물 수는 25,000마리 이상일 것으로 추정됩니다. 대부분의 지방 행정 구역마다 동물 보호소를 운영하고 있지만, 버려진 모든 동물들을 돌보기에는 공간과 자금이 턱없이 부족한 상태입니다. 그래서 동물 보호소에서는 어쩔 수 없이 이들을 안락사시킵니다. 최근에는 동물 보호단체에서 실시한 캠페인 덕분에 유기 동물에 대한 인식이 보다 높아졌습니다. 동물 보호소에서 애완동물을 입양하도록 촉구하거나, 애완동물 주인들이 좀 더 높은 책임감을 촉구하는 목소리가 커져 가고 있습니다.
